Chapter 1 of 13
The day as thirteen chapters alternating across the wall

“You can only be the Revolution. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere.”
Anarres
“To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws.”
Urras

Le Guin's novel moves in two strands. Odd chapters follow Shevek on Urras, in the present. Even chapters go back to Anarres and the years that led him there, until the past catches up with the moment of leaving and the two strands meet. Here the day is read as that book: thirteen chapters of about 1 h 51 min each, crossing the wall at every turn. The chapter reckoning is this clock's own, not a calendar from the novel. At midnight the return becomes the departure again.
